Branded caps: how to choose and brand them

Short answer

For most branded caps, embroidery on the front panels is the best choice: it’s durable, it suits the curve of the crown and it looks right on cotton twill, corduroy or polyester. A patch adds texture and holds detail that thread can’t. Pick the crown shape, peak and closure first, because they decide who will wear it.

Which branded caps to choose.

A cap is a piece of swag people can wear outside work, so choose one that looks like something they’d buy for themselves.

Crown: structured or unstructured
A structured cap has stiffened front panels that hold their shape and give the logo a flat, firm surface. An unstructured “dad cap” has a soft crown that sits lower and looks more relaxed. Structured suits bold logos; unstructured suits small, tonal marks.
Panels
Five-panel caps have one wide front panel with no centre seam, which gives a clean area for a logo. Six-panel caps have a seam down the middle of the front, so the logo needs to sit across it or be designed around it.
Peak
A pre-curved peak is the everyday choice that suits most people. A flat peak reads streetwear and pairs with a structured, higher crown.
Fabric
Cotton twill is soft and takes embroidery well. Polyester twill holds colour and shape. Corduroy, washed cotton and suede-effect fabrics add texture for a more premium cap. Mesh-back trucker caps stay cooler outdoors.
Closure
A snapback or a strap with a buckle looks smarter and adjusts finely. A hook-and-loop strap is quick and suits big events where sizes vary. Fitted caps need a size for every wearer, so avoid them for gifting.

How to brand caps: the best decoration methods.

  1. Flat embroidery

A common choice for caps: stitched thread follows the curve of the crown and has no print layer to peel. It suits logos and short wordmarks. Very small text and fine lines need simplifying.

    Logo embroidery
  2. Patches

A woven, embroidered, leather-look or silicone patch is made flat and then sewn or heat-applied to the cap. A woven patch holds finer detail than direct embroidery, and any patch gives a heritage or outdoor look.

  3. 3D puff embroidery

Stitches are sewn over a layer of foam, so the logo stands up from the panel. It works best on structured caps and bold, simple shapes.

  4. Print

Screen or transfer printing suits flat, simple logos and very fine detail on smooth polyester panels. It feels lighter than embroidery but can wear faster on a cap that gets handled every day.

Where the logo goes.

The front panels are the main event: centred, or slightly off-centre for a smaller mark. A second, smaller detail on the side panel, the back above the strap or the underside of the peak is a nice touch that people notice later. Keep the front logo within the flat part of the crown, away from seams and the peak edge, so it doesn’t distort.

Artwork tips for caps.

  • Send vector artwork. The stitch file is digitised from it, and a cap front is too small to hide a fuzzy edge. An AI, EPS, PDF or SVG file gives the cleanest stitch-out.
  • Design for a small, curved space. A cap front is far smaller than a T-shirt chest. A stacked or icon-only version of the logo usually works better than a long horizontal one.
  • Keep 3D puff bold. Raised embroidery suits thick letters and simple shapes. Thin strokes and small counters collapse over the foam.
  • Limit the thread colours. A logo in one to three thread colours stitches most cleanly. Tonal thread on a matching cap looks premium. We confirm the specification for every order.

Making it last.

Check the care label: many caps, such as Beechfield’s B10, are marked sponge clean. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, and let them dry in their own shape. Structured crowns can lose their form if they’re washed hard or crushed in a bag.

Embroidery and patches have no print layer to wear. Printed logos can wear where hands grip the peak and front panel.

Worth knowing

3D puff embroidery is stitched over embroidery foam (one maker’s is 3 mm thick), and the design must be digitised specifically for raised embroidery.

Where caps earn their place.

  • Events and field teams

A structured cap in a brand colour with a bold front logo helps staff stand out at a stand or a launch. Mesh-back caps keep outdoor teams cool.

  • Welcome packs

An unstructured cap with a small tonal logo is the one people wear at the weekend, so it earns its place in a new starter’s box.

  • Company stores

Adjustable caps don’t need sizing, which makes them an easy, no-guesswork product for a store where people choose their own kit.

Questions about branded caps.

Embroidery or patch on a cap?

Choose embroidery for a clean, classic logo with no print to wear. Choose a woven patch when the logo has fine detail, small text or several colours that thread can’t hold, or when you want a heritage look. Patches also suit textured caps, such as corduroy or wool, where direct embroidery can sink into the pile.

What is 3D puff embroidery on caps?

It’s embroidery stitched over a layer of foam, so the logo stands up from the cap. It looks best with bold letters on a structured front panel, and less good with thin lines or detailed logos.

Can you order branded caps without collecting sizes?

Yes, if you choose an adjustable cap. Snapbacks, buckle straps and hook-and-loop closures adjust across a range of head sizes, which is why caps are an easy choice for events, stores and large teams. Only fitted caps need a size per person.
